i did a nude photo shoot recently for a Love Your Body event on my campus, and upon receiving news of my involvement, my mom proceeded to freak the fuck out. i tried to reason with her, using a similar argument as the cartoon above, but she still refuses to accept that the female body is NOT something to be ashamed of or to hide away from everyone. while on the phone with her, all i could think was that she was spewing precisely what we’re trying to fight against—the idea that female bodies, particularly their breasts, are sacred things that need to be kept a secret until marriage. I wanted to say to her, “look mom, you’re blinded by the judeo-christian patriarchal social mores that are causing you to be upset with me, to feel sickened by photos of my exposed body being displayed in a show on campus.” but there’s no way to convince her of that. it’s too cyclical, and she’s too cynical.
